It’s already starting… (small style)
I always heard it from other moms and didn’t believe it could happen this early but it has already started.
What Lily wants to wear and what she doesn’t want to wear.
On a regular day basis we are ok, she will easily let me put whatever on her without any care.
And then there are the other days.
The days when I go to put a certain dress on her and she throws a mini fit because she doesn’t want that dress.
In that case, I pull two others from the closet and she says “este” (this one in Portuguese) and she will happily let me dress her in the one she picked out.
What about the day I dressed her in the pink Sesame Street shirt with yellow shorts?
She happily said “pink, shirt, lellow”…. and then I went to put on her green Salt Water sandals and she threw a fit because she wanted pink shoes.
Pointing at her pink shirt she looked at me and said “pink. shoes. mommy. pink. shoes”.
Mind you she doesn’t have pink shoes.
The closest thing to pink shoes that she has are the brown and fuschia Soft Star sandals and she wanted nothing to do with those.
When other moms would tell me “wait until she wants to pick out her own clothes”, I always thought to myself “good luck to her, she will wear what I want her to wear”.
But now here I am.
With a not even 2 year old toddler who sometimes doesn’t feel like wearing what I want to put on her.
Being a big believer that fashion is art and a huge part of self expression, I have to only think that sometimes she wants to express herself differently from what I have in mind for her.
I have to remember all the times as a child when I hated what my mom put on me but didn’t have a choice. (there was no fighting with that mama)
My baby is growing up and part of that is finding her own individuality.
I will choose to encourage it rather than to fight it. 🙂

Oh yea! I remember those days! Lu went through and “uncomfortable socks” phase. It was so hard getting her out the door to Montessori in the morn because she would have a fit about the socks. It was all about the seam across the toes. It was hard because only a couple of pairs she had were right. Thank god it was just a phase!
I think I know what Lily is ready for!!! Dress ups! It was the best form of entertainment for Lu and her friends. They played that for so many years and did dance shows. It was also entertaining for us! Oh she’s getting into that toddler time! 3>

I’ve heard about this and think it’s crazy that opinions start to form this young but you’ve got to believe it’s a good thing and that they are developing their sense of self.
Good for you for supporting it. I think you’ll find that by doing so, you’re also hopefully teaching her how to work together.
Good luck with that little fashionista! She’s adorable!

Lily you rockkkk!!!! You’re the best toddler fashionista!
Love all her outfits, but the white and blue dresses are killing me of cuteness, she looks adorable with those sun glasses, she is a cute and sweet girl!

So cute! It is great to see their personality emerge. Love her sunglasses. My oldest insist on always having a pair to wear when we’re in the car.

Those saltwater sandals win.
Also? Just wait until nothing will do but a fairy dress that is two sizes too small, a haphazard crown, her brothers Chuck Taylors and every beaded necklace she can find within a house-sized radius.
Sigh.

love that gap dress! so cute… my oldest one lets me dress her however i want (although she usually insists on some form of running shoe) but my little one will throw an insane fit over her clothing.. even if the clothing she wants to wear is 2 skirts and nothing else… oh babies…

@Mary,
well, at least you have 1 that you can just dress like a doll. 😉
