Welcome to the very first West Virginia mamas&their babies segment!
I would like to share with you my friend Rachel and her baby girl Zara.
I first met Rachel in 2007 on my first visit here to West Virginia and like most of the people I met, she was friendly and welcoming.
Because we don’t live here, Rachel and I only get to see each other a few times a year.
Enough for me to know that even though a bit reserved at first, Rachel is one smart, funny and witty mama.
Q- How old are you Rachel?
A- I’m 34
Q- Where were you born?
A- Born in Elkins, WV
Q- How long have you lived in West Virginia?
A- Lived in WV most of my life say 25 years, taking out various moves when I was a kid and college in Ohio.
Q- How old were you when you had Zara?
A- 33 when Zara was born
Q- How old is Zara?
A- She is 8 months old (on Wednesday the 24th)
Q- Did you breastfeed and if so for how long?
A- I am breastfeeding, trying to go a year.
Q- Are you a stay at home mom or working mom?
A- I’m a stay at home mom now but doubt I will stay that way. I’ve loved the time at home so far but can’t see myself doing this for the long haul.
Q- What was the hardest part for you of becoming a mom?
A- Hardest part?! Probably breastfeeding, I went one month with almost constant plugged duct issues. But the first three months on minimal sleep were pretty rough too!
Q- How did you come up with name for Zara?
A- Zara came from a suggestion by my mother. I liked it and mentioned it to my husband. Within a month it was obvious it was the only one we could agree on. Her middle name is Beatrice after my grandmother. She is Not named for royal princesses! I didn’t realize that bit till after she was born…
Q- What is the best advice you would give to a new mom?
A- Advice? Ha! I’m not qualified to give advice, ask me again in 18 years
