a morning at the nature center

February 22 2016. 001 (28)

Lily was off of school this past monday

although it was not sunny, it was not as cold as it has been so i decided to take her to the nature center

we had been there once before with neighbors shortly after we had just moved here

both Lily and i loved our first experience there and promised to return

what better day than a day off of school

especially when it’s a short ten minute car ride from our house

happy friday and happy weekend friends

go out and explore!

oh boy…. heart felt tears were quickly shed when we reached the otter habitat and “flippy” the otter Lily had loved from the last time was nowhere to be seen. she was so looking forward to seeing him. she named him “flippy” btw. we don’t know his real name

February 22 2016. 001 (8)

not “flippy”. she named this one “floppy”. he’s not as loved by her though….

a little play/climbing time at the playground which quickly filled up with lots of children

February 22 2016. 001 (30) February 22 2016. 001 (33)

a bit more animated (and with fingers crossed) after having had some play time, we headed back to the otters to look for “flippy” once again

“floppy” was there again and looking to be fed

i really like “floppy”. i did learn from Lily that otters tend to be quite territorial and are not so nice to each other all the time. i should probably start watching wild kratts with her…

and then this really amazing owl showed up. like most animals at the nature center, he is there because he was hurt. he got hit by a car and can no longer hunt for himself. he has failed every hunting test. he is there for good. most bird accidents are caused by cars. all those apple cores, banana peels and other foods people throw out their cars, before they disintegrate back into the earth, birds will try to eat them and risk getting hit by cars. i won’t be doing that anymore
