Nine hours and twenty minutes

The title of this post is how long of a flight it was from Lisboa to Miami.

Since Lily woke up this morning at 5:30am Miami time (9:30am Portugal time) and I’m having a very strong cup of coffee already, I would like to talk about a few things.

Let me start with flying.

I hate it.

I hate flying! Even though I have gotten better with age, putting me on a plane is one of the worst things you can do to me.

I usually cannot sleep the night before I’m about to fly from nerves and anxiety, my palms get all clammy during the flight (forget it if there is turbulence), once I did not get on a flight because I had a bad feeling about it. I literally think I’m going to die every time I get on a plane.

Then you add a child on to all of that and well, it makes things a little trickier.

Because of Lily, I have to try to calm and compose myself. I cannot show that I’m scared because I know she will feel it and then it will rub off on her.

We had one hour of really bad turbulence on our flight last night and while I almost ripped the arm rest with my right hand from fear and nerves, I very lightly and calmly held onto Lily’s hand with my left hand.

As I sat in my seat and thought we were going to die, I smiled at Lily and told her everything was going to be ok.

I usually try to knock myself out during a flight because hey, if I sleep not only will time go by faster but, I’m not awake during anything.

Lily is not the best plane sleeper, she probably slept a total of 4 hours during our flight yesterday. So, if she doesn’t sleep, I don’t sleep. And even when she sleeps, I don’t sleep because I’m afraid she will roll off the seat (because it happened before).

Flying was not easy for me before Lily and it hasn’t become any easier with Lily but it won’t stop me from traveling.

So maybe she will cry on the flight. Maybe she will cry the whole flight (most doubtful). Maybe she won’t sleep during the whole flight (most probable). That won’t stop us from going places.

It’s not only hard flying but it’s always hard adjusting to a destination.

I have lately felt guilty and like a momster dragging Lily around places I want her to be, get her to get used to family, friends and new places and once she starts getting used to things and people, it’s time for us to go.

But hey, that’s the way things go, right?

If I fear things too much and I don’t expose her to things, not only will she not get to know her family and new places but I will teach her fear.

And teaching her fear of traveling and knowing new places would be basically criminal.

So, even though traveling is not easy by any means, I will not stop doing it. 🙂

Thank you all for listening to my early coffee ramble. We are home and it feels so good. I’m having coffee in my coffee mug, sitting in bed while listening to Will and Lily playing in her room. Seems like we never left.

Have a great weekend everyone!

mama eagle and baby eagle have landed!

“I’m happy again”

This time around, this trip to Portugal has been quite hard on Lily.

After more than one month away in West Virginia and NC, after 1 week at home, she was just starting to get used to Miami again.

She was not yet ready to let it all go.

The first night here, she was so exhausted that she slept 14 hours straight. (from 9pm-11am)

I thought the transition had been done successfully.

Was I wrong!

Wednesday night Lily went to bed again before 9pm, a bit later than usual. After she was asleep for 2 hours, she woke up and wouldn’t go back to sleep.

She was worried and restless.

“Airplane” she kept saying and wanted to get off the bed.

It was obvious to me that she wanted to go back home.

I asked her if she wanted to talk to pai (Will) and got him online.

We video chatted for a while. She asked him to get certain books from her room and to please read them to her.

She kept saying “pai. airplane. this house. sit with me”.

I tried my hardest not to break down in tears and can’t even imagine how Will must have felt being thousands of miles away from her.

It was heartbreaking!!

While in bed with her, I tried to soothe her but she continued on being restless.

Although she wasn’t crying or trying to leave the bed, I could see her brain going fast just by looking at her eyes.

She eventually fell asleep a little after 2am. (she has never, ever done this before)

Yesterday morning when she woke up at 8am, she wanted to get dressed and again said “airplane”.

In the afternoon I took her to the park and all of the sudden I could start seeing the Lily that I know.

Once on the swing, I asked her if she was happy.

She replied “I’m happy again”.

Nothing like seeing your child happy. Nothing like feeling guilty for your child’s unhappiness.

“i’m happy again”

happy smiles 🙂

We are here!

Lily and I arrived in Portugal safely and on time yesterday.

First off let me tell you guys that I LOVE TAP!

If you are not familiar with TAP, it is a Portuguese airline that I have not traveled with in many years but since they just launched the only direct flight from Miami to Lisbon, Lily and I flew with them.

The plane was clean, all the seats had new pillows and blankets that were still wrapped and the food was actually pretty good.

But, the most impressive thing was that not only did they give me a seat with an empty seat next to me when I checked in but, once Lily and I boarded and we were in our own individual seats, the nicest flight attendant came over to me and told me to go ahead and move to an empty row of 4 seats.

Lily and I had 4 seats all to ourselves!

This nice flight attendant was there to bring Lily coloring books with pencils, apple juice and cookies when she was throwing the biggest freaky tantrum I have ever seen. (like exorcist style)

Ok, so the tantrum… for the ones of you who don’t personally know Lily, she is not the type to throw tantrums.

Every once in a while she might have a small melt down but it’s usually when she has been pushed too far and is tired.

Lily had a long day on monday. She woke up at her usual time, went to the park, didn’t nap and, at 8:30pm when we were driving to the airport, she fell asleep in the car.

She slept in my arms all the way through checking in until going through security.

When we got to our gate she was fully awake again but extremely tired and we still had an hour of waiting time. She spent her waiting time coloring.

Once we boarded and were seating in our 4 seats, she started getting really tired and completely inconsolable.

She didn’t want anything. She didn’t want to sit in her seat, she didn’t want to sit on my lap. She didn’t want Pooh. She didn’t want her reading books. She didn’t want her coloring books. She didn’t want her snacks. She didn’t want the nice lady’s ipod seating in the row next us. It was “no”, “no”, “NO” and kicking at everything and anything.

And then it was take off time. The nice fight attendant came by to attach the special infant belt onto my belt and she unleashed a crazy kind of beast in Lily.

She started screaming, crying, kicking, turning red and purple, there was no talking to her.

I was freaked out not knowing if something was terribly wrong with her, completely embarrassed that my child (the only one on the flight) was causing such a scene and completely clueless of what else to do.

After much kicking and screaming on my lap, she finally passed out while eating a cookie. Have you ever?

Once she was well asleep, I moved her over to the 2 seats next to me and she slept the whole flight until 30 minutes before landing.

It was a tough beginning but smooth all the rest of the way and we are here.

I got to see my brother, his gf and my new nephew already. He is so tiny and dreamy. 🙂

We are here for a month and it’s all about the family this trip but I will try to do my best to show you this beautiful country. So stay tuned!

P.S.- I just realized it’s wednesday. We sort of lost a day so I don’t have a mamas&their babies for you. But, go over to Happy Chaos because Natasha does!

Lily before something took over her body

this picture of a very mad Lily moments after she was born is the only one i have that somewhat compares to what she looked like. exorcist i tell ya….

Mommy Style Update

Flying…. UGH, I HATE it!!

I must say that I have gotten a LOT better about it.

Can we talk about “plane” fashion?

I don’t understand those girls who wear super high heels and tight clothes when they fly.

I wish I could wear my pajamas and socks!

When I fly, I usually wear some kind of legging/jegging, a tank and a cardigan/loose shirt.

What do you like to wear when you fly?

Cardigan- Zara (when you pack light, you get to wear the same cardigan 4 days in a row)

shirt- French Connection

tank- Old Navy

Corduroy skinnies- Anthropologie

booties- French Connection

bag- Urban Outfitters

My dearest Lily,

You turned 16 months old yesterday. (I want to scream!)

We just returned from Raleigh, NC and I’m not just going to say this because you are my baby but, you are such a pleasure to travel with.

Our flight was delayed almost 2 hours leaving from Miami and you just happily hung out at the airport waving at people, rolling around on the floor, eating your raisins.

You slept almost the whole flight both ways.

Once in Raleigh, you easily adjusted to the family and house that awaited us.

You slept through the night and napped as usual.

You stayed with uncle Neil, Myra and Duddie at their house while pai and I went driving around and you didn’t even cry.

It is so wonderful to know that we can basically travel and go with you anywhere.

Thank you ratinha for being such a wonderful little girl.

I love you,

your mama

P.S.- Here are some pictures of you with Phillip, your new canine friend. 🙂 (because YES, you still LOVE dogs)

A safe trip

We had a great flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Huntington.

Once we landed there was lots of snow on the ground.

It’s amazing how you can travel 2.5 hours and have a total change of weather.

We spent thursday night at aunt Maury’s house in Charleston and finally arrived to avo Hayes’s and avo Joao’s yesterday afternoon.

We are all unpacked and ready for some family fun.

We are once again surrounded by snow so it looks like it will be another white Christmas. 🙂

Hope you all have a great weekend!

ready for take off

Back where we left off

We left Beja, Portugal on friday at 3am in order to be at the Lisboa airport by 5am and catch our flight at 7am.

We finally arrived home in Miami at 6pm. (11pm Portuguese time)

We were all exhausted!!!

After going to sleep very early on all 3 nights, we are all finally feeling pretty much back to normal.

This weekend was mostly for unwinding and catching up with good friends.

It’s funny because in a way, being surrounded by our friends and chilling out underneath the palm trees, it felt like we were never even really gone.

Here are some fun pictures from sunday.
