Monte Gordo

21 days in

Lily and I arrived here in Portugal exactly 21 days ago.

This is the longest either one of us has been away from Will.

We spent the last week and a half at the beach in the south of Portugal and even though it was wonderful, it was hard not having internet access because that way we weren’t able to chat with Will like we do here in Beja.

Traveling for me is wonderful and extremely hard all at once.

Wonderful because I’m getting to know different places or visiting family but hard because I start missing home.

This time around is even harder because Will is not here with us.

I miss my best friend, my lover, my husband.

Lily misses her pai.

I miss my friends, my home, my plants, my life back in Miami (minus the heat) and I know that Lily does too.

Soon enough we will be back home and then I will be missing my family here in Portugal and wishing we could be with them.

That’s the way it goes. And such is life isn’t it?

Here are the rest of the pictures from our good times spent in Monte Gordo. It was nice being at the beach, I felt closer to home.

An afternoon in Ayamonte

Ayamonte, Spain is the first spanish town we reach coming from Monte Gordo, Portugal.

When I was a young girl, we would drive to Vila Real de Santo Antonio and then take the ferry.

In the past decade, a bridge has been built and you can now just drive over to Spain.

After a lunch in Portugal, my dad took us all to Ayamonte where there is a small zoo at their public park.

Needless to say, Lily had a good time.

Before getting here, I never even took into consideration the fact that I would be single parenting Lily for a month.

I thought about the flight, seeing my family, diapers, wipes, what clothes to bring, everything except for single parenting.

It has not been easy. Some days definitely more challenging than others. Especially the ones when Lily wakes up and she is a…. shall I say persistent almost little 2 year old?

It is all good however, my thoughts go out to you single mothers.

Here are some delightful moments from Monte Gordo.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

Monte Gordo

Monte Gordo is in the Algarve, in the the south-east part of Portugal that is closer to Spain.

It’s a place where my grandmother came all her life, my mother, her siblings, me and my cousins.

It’s where we have come for generations.

Not only is Monte Gordo a wonderful beach town, it is also a fishing town.

A place where you can see the fishermen take their boats out to sea and where in the early morning you can go and buy their fresh catch.

This is where we are.

We are lucky, the weather has been wonderful this year.
