prima Ana

A story of 3 cousins

When I was a little girl growing up in Portugal, I grew up with 2 cousins.

Lena and Ana.

Lena is my mother’s brother’s daughter and Ana is my mother’s first sister’s daughter.

Lena and Ana are actually double cousins (does that term exist?) because both my uncle and aunt married siblings from the same family.

Anyway, Lena and I are only 5 months apart (I’m older) and Ana is a few years younger than the both of us.

We all lived in different towns but they were all close to each other.

Because Lena and I were the closest in age, we were the best of friends.

We grew up like sisters really.

Our families would get together almost every weekend, every holiday, for a month during the summer we would gather at our family beach house, my mom was Lena’s mom and my aunt was my mom too.

Ana, the younger cousin, got to be a big sister to a brother (Vitor) first.

Then Lena, the middle cousin got to be a big sister to a brother (Eugenio).

I prayed every night for what seemed to be like years but I too finally became a big sister to a brother (Ricardo).

Because Lena and I would spend the summers together, we would play mommies and dress our brothers like girls. (so we were our mommies and our brothers were us. poor tortured brothers!)

All of us girl cousins are now married and proud mothers.

Lena has Sebastiao (9) and Sofia (short of 18 months).

As you all know, I have Lily (going on 19 months).

Ana, the youngest just became the proud mother of Teresinha.

It’s a new generation of 3 girl cousins by the exact same order as before.

I know it is hard because we are so far away from them but, I hope that Lily grows up to be close to her cousins like I grew up close to mine.

Very girlie indeed

Lily is becoming quite the little girl.

She loves jewelry.

She likes picking out her own shoes. (I would like to say she gets this only from me but, you should see Will’s shoe collection)

She likes bags. (ok, she gets this from me πŸ˜‰ )

Lately, whenever she and I are headed out and she sees me grab my bag, she grabs a bag.

Here she is as she walked around our neighborhood yesterday.

I like to call it LILY AND THE CITY.

what? you didn’t know that 2 bags is the new trend?

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

This morning we went to a Valentine’s Day piano concert at the Miami Beach Community Church.

It was orchestrated by one of the moms we know from the park.

She played Disney, movie and classic piano love songs.

All of Lily’s friends were there and she got to give them the hearts I made for her to hand out. (because we heart our friends!!!!)

Everyone had a great time.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!!

Some videos

I wanted to upload these videos while we were in West Virginia but the internet was so slow there, I couldn’t.

Pictures are great but every once in a while it’s nice to have videos.

Specially for those far away family members who are keeping up with the blog.

Like avo Ricardo, tio Ricky and prima Ana. πŸ˜‰

So, here is a video of Lily walking in the snow, Lily sledding, Lily with some of her favoriteΒ  music toys in WV AND Will and Lily with Titus singing along to the harmonica (a favorite!).

Enjoy! πŸ™‚

Lily’s 1st birthday

For Lily’s birthday yesterday, we had a small family birthday party for her at tia Tete’s house.

As always there was lots of food and tons of sweets.

Lily walked more than ever yesterday.

She was all over the yard and the house all by herself.

We sang happy birthday to her both in Portuguese and in English.

She was all about the cake, the blowing of the candle, the opening of all the wonderful presents that she received and wearing the beautiful dress that uncle Michael gave her a while back.

It was a wonderful day.

I can’t believe she is 1. She is officially a toddler…

I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Picture overload again. πŸ˜‰

Avo Carmo’s birthday

It was my mom’s birthday yesterday.

Tia Tete organized a big lunch at her house with the whole family. (only tio Ricky and Anabela were missing πŸ™ )

The lunch started at 12:30pm and when we left it was 9pm. LOL

It was an ALL day event.

Everyone had a wonderful time just spending time together enjoying the present and reminiscing about the old times.

There were also exciting news… prima Ana is pregnant! πŸ™‚ We are all soooooooooo happy for her and Nuno.

P.S- if these ALL day eating events continue, I will need some fat pants because I sure won’t fit in my skinny ones.

Lily’s first airplane ride

Our plane ride from Miami to Portugal was… LONG!

8.5 hours from Miami to Madrid.

What was supposed to be a 4 hour lay over in Madrid turned into 5 hours.

1 hour from Madrid to Lisboa.

14 hours! Ugh.

Lily was really good though.

She had a hard time falling asleep and tossed and turned while she was sleeping but did sleep through more than half the long flight.

The lay over in Madrid was a little tough.

I was carrying Lily (big mistake, next time I will bring a stroller) and after the long flight and having to go through the entire airport to get to customs and then to our connecting gate, my arm was killing me!!

Once we got to chill at our gate, we caught a beautiful sunrise and Lily was so happy to be able to just stretch out and walk around.

She was so exhausted that she fell asleep before we even got onto our connecting flight.

She wouldn’t even wake up to get off the plane.

I had her “indie” outfit in my carry-on bag but because we were both so exhausted, I never changed her.

Either way, both avo Carmo and avo Ricardo were there waiting for us as well as Lily’s biggest fan, prima Ana and Nuno.

It was a happy welcome committee. πŸ™‚

this was my seat when I got on the plane. don’t worry, they brought me a cushion πŸ˜‰

Things we LOVE!

When avo Hayes and avo Joao were here, they purchased a new friend for Lily.

It is a jellycat elephant and it is now a staple in Lily’s crib. We LOVE it!

It has joined the other friends in the crib (crib toys don’t leave the crib) that help Lily enjoy nap time and wake up time.

Here is Lily yesterday as I found her when she woke from her nap and the elephant (he doesn’t have a name yet) in his new crib spot next to Violet Blabla doll (a present from our friend Rikki), the music bunny that prima Ana gave Lily and the sleep sheep. Lily wears a shirt by babyGap.

can you see those 2 little teeth?
